So you’ve finally decided to set up a page for your business on Facebook. Good for you! Creating a Facebook page for your business will give your clients one more way to connect with you beyond just your traditional website and businesscards. The good news is that it’s easy to do and you don’t need a Facebook account to get started. Plus, you can create more than just one; for instance, you may need a page for your company and then another for your product. It takes just a few minutes to get up and running, but you will need to have the following on hand:
- Your business contact information such as
- physical address
- email address
- phone number
- website URL
- Your logo image in JPG or other standard format (optional, but highly recommended)
Once you have all of this information collected, you’re ready to set up a page on the most popular social website in the world! Just follow these 8 (fairly simple) steps for much more easily creating a facebook page for your business.
Step 1 – Facebook Create Page
Go to Facebook.com. If you don’t have an account already, from the Facebook.com home page you can use the “Create Page” feature.
If you already have a Facebook profile, you can create a page right from your profile. Just scroll to the bottom of the page and click the “Create a Page” button:
Step 2 – Select Page Type
You will be given six different options. Since we’re focusing on small business pages, select the “Local Business or Place” option.
Step 3 – Business Info
You will be given a new screen (or view) requiring that you fill out a form of your basic information for your business. It leads you through every step of the process and is fairly straightforward.
Step 4 – Account Info
If you’re logged in already, you’ll skip this step. Otherwise, the next step will require you to enter account information. If you already have an account, enter in your own information. If not, simply follow the steps and create a new account.
Step 5 – Profile Picture
If your company has a logo, you can upload it now so that people can confirm they’ve found the right place. The minimum size is 180x180px.
Step 6 – About Your Business Info
Next you plug in all the information about your business that you want to make public. This is where you add your small business bio, the website, phone numbers, and other information so people can find you quickly.
Step 7 – Facebook Web Address
Now you get to pick a web address. This will be the Facebook.com/YourBusinessName address that you can use. Instead of a long list of numbers that Facebook used in the past, now you get to actually choose your URL!
Ideally you should pick a URL that is close or identical to your normal website. So if you have www.example.com, try to get Facebook.com/example. This ties your brand in nicely. Alternatively, if you have a long URL like www.This-Is-My-Example-Site.com, you can claim a very short URL instead, such as Facebook.com/my-example-site.
Step 8 – Inviting Friends
The whole point of having a Facebook page is to get people involved, so definitely start inviting friends using your email address account. Facebook will securely log into your email accounts and send a generic invite to those who have Facebook accounts of their own. This invite encourages Facebook users to “Like” your page, which then gives you the ability to put updates on their walls automatically.
Advanced Tip: If you are tech/design savvy, see my Facebook Photoshop Template and instructions for how to upload the template to your small business Facebook page. Branding your Facebook page is a great way to really make your small business look professional. If you are unfamiliar with Photoshop, however, you can always hire a designer or even a graphic design student from your local college to help you with this process.
